Upper Elementary Class Descriptions

 

Class: American History & Geography
Description:    This class will comver American History from the years of discovery up through the 20th century. The History of Our United States, by Abeka
will used as a guide for the history portion of the class. For the geography portion of the class  Abeka Geography, Maps and Review will be used.
 

Class: Writing
Description:     The purpose of this class is to instill a love of communicating using the written word. Some of the skills students will asquire include: being able
to organize thoughts, correct sentence structure, paragraph construction, composition organization and descriptive technique. The eight parts of speech will
also be reviewed.
 

Class: Greek and Latin Roots
Description:    Introduction to Latin and Greek in a creative setting. Students will learn to recognize English derivatives of Greek and Latin words to enrich
vocabulary and grammar skills . Students will learn over 350 Latin and 75 Greek roots.
 

Class: Beyond Five in a Row
Description:   This is a literature-based class reading fiction and non-fiction chapter books. The students will read books at home and learn about book genres,
using a thesaurus and dictionary. This class will include some grammar, history, geography, and minor science experiments. Career paths, human relationships,
and fine arts are also included in this curriculum.
 

Class: Science
Description:     We will focus on hands-on activities and projects in class to support the reading completed at home. Some of the projects may require
completion at home.
 

Class: Elementary Adventures in Art
Description:   We will explore a wide variety of art media. Projects will be done in a different way each year, so it can be repeated by students who have already
taken this class. Supplies will be provided in class, and parents will be given a list of recommended supplies for at-home use.
 

Class: Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge
Description:   The goal of this class is for the participating students to achieve the 85th percentile in five events, resulting in the awarding of a Presidential Patch, certificate and t-shirt. Ability to perform mild athletic events such as endurance run/walk, sit-ups, shuttle run, pull-ups or flexed arm hang, V-sit reach for flexibility will be helpful for participation in the class. For those students who do not achieve the 85th percentile, a participation level award and t-shirt will be presented.
